Amelia Mae: Three Months

Dear Amelia Mae-

3 months ago today we met you for the first time. You emerged from my body and I pulled you up in my arms. And in the 3 months since that magical day, in my arms is still your favorite place to be, and I couldn't be happier about that.

You are full of smiles and coos. You are a wonderful sleeper and just a sweet, sweet girl. I love looking at your beautiful face, I love making you smile and I just love you.

Don't grow up too quickly.

all my love.

Amelia Mae: One Month

Wow, a month went by so fast! Shockingly fast. I'm trying to brace myself for how fast the next 11 months are going to fly by. I blinked and she is a month old.

Amelia Mae is a sweet girl. She likes to be held, she likes to sleep (she's a REALLY good night sleeper) and she likes to eat - no LOVES to eat! I weighed her on the Wii today and she came in at well over 8 pounds!! Not bad for coming home at less than 6 pounds!

Hello Bright Eyes.
(We think her eyes are going blue like her brothers. Just recently they have gotten much lighter. Mommy is going to be the only browned one in the house!)

IMG_0375
Look at the head control!

IMG_0411
Yum, yum, yum! I want to eat!
(She is a great nurser now! It was a hard first 2 weeks, but now we have it figured out.)

Snoozing again! This time in the arms of Grandma Ann.

Our unhappy monkey! She did NOT like having her picture taken.
(This is why announcements haven't been mailed yet. We've been trying to get a good photo and she hasn't been too cooperative!)

Kicked Out!

Yesterday Greyson was officially discharged for the Early Intervention program. He's been getting therapy from the state since he was just a few months old. We started out with Occupation Therapy for motor skills and then after he mastered sitting, crawling, climbing, standing and walking we moved on to Speech Therapy since he was such a silent little guy. Over the past year and a half Greyson went from barely making any sounds to speaking at 3+ year-old level!

When we had our big meeting in December - just 6 months ago - he was still barely talking and we were considering making the move from every-other week therapy to weekly because he was so far behind. Then just a few weeks later his speech took off and we moved down to just once a month therapy. And now were are finished! The big meeting planned for this week was going to be about getting him into special needs preschool and writing and IEP, but he doesn't need it. In fact our service coordinator said Greyson is only the SECOND child she's worked with that has graduated from EI at this point, usually if you are still getting services at 2+ then your transfer over to preschool at 3, and in December we thought that would be the case for Greyson too, but he had other plans!

Our therapist said she would love to keep Greyson in the program just so she can still come over, but as he is now talking well ABOVE his age level she just can't. I'm going to miss her! She has been a great source of information and just a lovely person to have in our lives. She's given me so much great advice and wonderful ideas over the past 18 months. Greyson loves her and she's just been such a constant in our lives that I'm really sad we won't be seeing her again.

I honestly can't say that ST was really the catalyst for the massive improvements in Greyson's speech, or if he would have come to this point on his own given the time, but whatever the case I'm just so happy that he is speaking well now.

We are officially kicked out of EI!! I really felt this was the last hold out from his "preemie experience" and now we've moved past that too! Way to go Greyson - anyone who meets you now would NEVER guess how you started out.

Trying to realize that it's just part of childhood and parenthood.

Kids getting hurt.

It happens.

It's a learning experience.

Right?

Today I took Greyson out for a Mommy/Son day since I've started feeling bad that very soon he will lose his only child status. After a trip to the library that ended in a melt-down I tried to save the afternoon by taking him to the park near our house. Ah, the best laid plans.

At the park there is a slide that he loves. It's a BIG twisty slide and the path up to it is covered and easy for him to climb. There is also a ladder that goes from the level the slide is on, down about 5 feet to the next level which is about 3 feet off the ground. We've done this slide countless times before. On this day he had already gone down it about 5 times.

So I'm standing at the bottom of the slide waiting for him to go down and I can see that he's wandering over to where the ladder is. I tell him not to go over there and to just go down the slide. But he doesn't listen. I start yelling at him to move back. Instead he starts to try to climb down the ladder. I'm telling him no and trying to climb up on to the bottom platform to get to him, but it doesn't have a normal ladder, it's some kind of "fun to climb" thing for kids. And me and my big pregnant belly couldn't get up there fast enough. There is a dad there with his kid and he sees what is going on and rushes over. At the same moment that he reaches the platform Greyson loses his grip and falls like a rag doll the full 5 feet on to the metal platform below.

The dad hands Greyson around to corner to me as soon as I was able to get up there. Greyson is screaming, but mainly seemed scared. I just held him and asked him to move his arms and legs, which he did. I was holding his head, just as a way to hold him closer to me. I was looking him over and nothing seemed to be cut or broken and just as I was breathing a sigh of relief I moved me hand - which was now covered in blood. I look and he has about a 1 - 2 inch gash on the left side of his scalp. With him still in my arms I scoot us off the platform and down a little slide. Then we head to the car. At this point he's already stopped crying, but keeps saying "Mommy" over and over. I hated putting him in the car seat, I just wanted to put him in the front so I could keep my hands on him while driving to the doctor's office. But that would have been horribly unsafe, so into the car seat he went. He wasn't happy to get out of my arms, but he didn't fight it. He actually pushed the gash part of his head into the seat and rode the whole way like that.

During the drive he was so calm. No more tears at all. Instead I just kept asking him questions, having him count with me and going over the alphabet. He was such a champ. Once we got to the doctor's office he wanted me to carry him - which I happily did, down a flight of stairs since we couldn't get parking on the main level. Once we were in the doctors office he just wanted to sit on my lap and press the gash into my shoulder. He instinctually kept pressure on the wound.

The nurse came in and cleaned out the wound, which was not fun. This is the same nurse who gave him the MMR shot on Thursday, and she mentioned that it made her sad that Greyson is going to relate her to pain. Awhile later the doctor came in, looked and Greyson's head and told me he's like to just glue it shut since it is in his hair. He said I could pick between stitches, which would make a tighter close, but take longer and would be more traumatic, staples that would be quick, but would require a follow up to have them removed, or the glue that will just fall out later. I opted for the glue, since that was the doctor's initial recommendation.

We had to lay Greyson on his tummy and Dr. H had to practically lay on him to keep him still and put glue in. But after much fighting and Greyson yelling "Get Off" and "All Done!" over and over, we were finally done. Greyson sat in my lap and calmed down. Dr. H said that with that much fight in him, he's clearly okay other than the gash which will heal. He then told me this is just one of those things that happen and something similar happened to his daughter. That's one of the reasons I love our doctor, nothing flusters him, and he recognizes that kids will be kids and get hurt. In fact early on when I was still a freaking out new mom he told me that "you can't keep your kid in a bubble. You both have to live even if that means some sniffles and scraped knees." or in this case gaping head wounds.

I took Greyson home and gave him a slice of cake for being so brave. He went on to play all afternoon like nothing happened at all. He's resilient!

After everything was said and done, I'm just glad he is okay. And hopefully next time we are at the park he'll listen to me. I hate that my kid git hurt, but this is also how kids learn. My mom says that some kids learn the easy way (being told "no you could get hurt" and accepting that) and some learn the hard way. Greyson learned the hard way today. I hope he doesn't make a habit out of it.

But even after this we have still made it to 2.5 years without stitches or a broken bone and I'm claiming that as a victory.

Chatter Box

Greyson is officially a chatter box. The kid who wouldn't talk less than 4 months ago, now won't stop talking. And it's not just that he repeats words, it's that he tells me things, in sentence format!

Here are just a few things he says with some regularity:
"Mommy lay down." (when he wants me to lay down next to him in his bed)
"Mommy read it." (when he wants me to read him a book, while laying down next to him in bed)
"Mommy play trains" (or blocks or cars. Whatever he wants me to do with him.)
"Greyson put socks on." (He really wants to be able to put his own socks and shoes on, we just aren't' there yet.)
"Daddy home yet?" (almost heartbreaking, but starting about 5:30 Greyson is on the lookout for his daddy!)

There are so many more. Really I can't get over it. The light bulb turned on and it is 100 watts when I was expecting 25!

Now Entering Bonus Time!

Today I am 29 weeks and 4 days pregnant. We have reached the exact point when Greyson was born. Every day after today is a bonus day to me. I'm hoping for 72 bonus days which would put us at 40 weeks exactly, but from this point on I'm just happy for every day.

Up to this point I've been a little (or a lot) fearful of having another preemie, an even earlier preemie. And no matter how healthy things have been and no matter how many times I've been told that the issues we had with Greyson aren't issues this time I still couldn't shake the fear. But now we've crossed a new threshold. While I'm still scared of having a preemie, I feel safer on this side of 29-4. It feels good.

Belly Pics: LB#2 - Week 24

24 weeks!
Yippee!!!
We've made it to 24 weeks with no problems! 24 weeks is a HUGE milestone. 24 weeks equals VIABILITY! It is nice to know that at this point Little Bird has a fighting chance to make it outside the womb. When I was pregnant with Greyson hitting this date made me feel so goo because we were coming off of a miscarriage and just knowing that my baby had a chance felt good. Now, coming off a preemie and knowing 24 weekers I know that while this date means a chance it is a fighting chance and my tiny baby will have to do LOTS of fighting to survive.
Luckily everything looks FANTASTIC and May Baby will be staying put for many, many more weeks!

It has offically been two years

I just realized what day today is. January 22nd. Homecoming Day.
Two years ago today we brought our son home.
The Perry Family

Last year we celebrated with cake.
IMG_3393

This year we celebrated by just having a wonderful day with our child. After breakfast together we played and then later went out to lunch. Then Greyson and I ran some errands and Ma-Ga (translation: grandma or possibly "my grandma") and Pop came over for a visit. Then he took a nap, played in the snow (which he was not fond of), snuggled and played some more. Basically we just spent the day enjoying this wonderful person in our lives.

So there wasn't cake this year. There was still wonder, love, and a deep appreciation of how far our little boy has come.

Happy Homecoming Day Greyson!
We love you!!

Fever!

Greyson ran his first fever last week. Yep, that's right at 22 months he just ran his first fever. I'm sad that it coincided with us getting down to only nursing once a day and even then for a very short period of time. Is this a sign of things to come once I can't give him a daily immune boost? I know that it has to happen, he has to get sick because all babies/toddlers/kids do, but that doesn't mean I like it!

So Greyson was a lethargic and sad little monkey on Wednesday night. Some Motrin, a cool rice-pack, some sunggles with mom and an unauthorized breastfeeding session brought his fever down within a few hours.

IMG_4910

But it came back later that night and we just couldn't shake it. I called the pediatrician and they said since it was under 103 not to worry about it and not even treat it with Motrin or Tylenol - just to let it run its course. Logically I agree with that, but as a mom it was hard not to "do" something. What we decided to "do" was snuggle up for a few days.

IMG_4914

I made Greyson a comfy spot on the couch, snuggled Smooch Lion up next to him and we sat around and watched movies and read books.

By Friday he was fever-free and acting like his old self again. He even found a new place to read - sitting in on the end-table!

So worth it

Today was our NICU reunion and it was even better than last year. It was wonderful to see all the growing, happy babies toddlers and it was even better to see the other moms! I love you NICU Mommas!

Every time we go up to the NICU, heck every time I drive past the NICU, I get a little dip in my stomach about everything we went through to get Greyson home to us. And honestly he had an easy ride for a baby his gestation. But whether you had a 2 day, a 10 day or a 100 day stay having a baby in the NICU is a traumatic experience. But it is so worth it. These little guys are AMAZING!

Something else that is worth it...finally being named "mom-mom" by my son! Yes, that's right! My non-talker pointed to me TWICE tonight and said "mom-mom" and in front of witnesses! YAY! I love that kid!

SHOES!

Greyson has a thing for shoes. He loves to bring people shoes, he likes to wear our shoes and he likes to wear him own shoes. Well today was a shoe milestone...

He put them on by himself!!

We have a word!

YAY! Greyson speech therapist will be so happy!

He's saying "JUICE" and meaning juice! It is great. We have never been big on giving Greyson juice, it just seemed unnecessary. But at the grocery store yesterday I found "VRUIT" and thought I would give it a try. I bought the Berry Blend which is just: Apple Juice, Carrot Juice, Raspberry Juice, Red Grape Juice, Beet Juice and Celery Juice (Water, Juice Concentrates); Natural Flavors, Vitamin C, Beta-Caroten. It sounded good to me.

I mixed Greyson a small cup of half water and half vruit and said "This is juice, would you like some juice?" He drank it all and then went to the fridge and said "Juice?" I made him repeat it several times to make sure my ears weren't playing tricks on me. Nope, he said juice and he wanted more juice. You can bet I gave him some more.

Since them he has asked for juice by name several times. YAY!!

First "real" haircut

Greyson has had several haircuts from "Salon D'Parents" which involved just buzzing him with Michael's beard trimmer. Now that he is older that just isn't going to work. So we headed over to Great Clips and Greyson had his first "Big-Kid Haircut".

He was a sleepy and VERY serious the whole time. He didn't fuss, or wiggle too much, which was great, but he didn't look like he was having a good time either. The stylist said he was the best behaved toddler she has ever worked on. Yay! His serious mood helped him get a really even cut. Now he looks even more like a kid - where did my baby go?!

Strange how things work out

Today Greyson is 18 months old. 1.5 years old. I have no idea how this could have happened. He's going to be 10 before I can blink. He's showing me daily that he's a toddler and not a baby. He's my wonderful little boy who knows no fear. He makes my life so happy.

It was 2 years ago tomorrow that I found out I was pregnant with Greyson. June 2, 2008 that those magical pink lines showed up and changed our lives forever. June 2nd to December 1st. I only knew I was pregnant for only 6 months. That seems so strange to me now. Just 6 months. I'm interested to see how much Greyson changes in the next 6 months. I don't even want to think about all the mischief he'll get into by the time he turns two!

But at 18 months our beautiful son is happy, healthy, crazy, strong and full of mischief already. 2 years after finding out that I would be someone's mom, I am beyond happy to be Greyson's mom - although I would like it if he wouldn't climb on the dining room table...

Potty Time!

Today Greyson pooped in the potty!
Well kind of...

Last weekend I bought Greyson a little potty. My plan is to just make it part of his daily life so when he does potty train in a year or two it will hopefully make it easier.

So today he was standing by the bookshelf and made his "poopy face" and I said "Do you have to go potty?" He looked at me then took off to find it! I pulled his diaper off and sat him down and after a few moments he pooped in the potty! Well, the poop never made it into the potty - it was still clinging to his bum. But the point is he sat on the potty to poop! I'm so proud of him!

I'm hoping this is something we can make a habit of, but even if it doesn't happen again for a year I'm still really proud of him!

What a Difference A Year Makes

greyson098
March 9th, 2009

He was so little - but still more then double his birth-weight last March. When this photo was taken Greyson had been home with us for only 45 days. At that point he had still spent more time in the NICU then he had with us. It is so weird to think about that. Some times I forget that his first 2 months weren't spent at home. And then I remember, and I get a little sad at the time we missed together.

Who would have thought that one year later he'd be doing this?

I am astonished every day by the strides Greyson has taken this past year. He's surpassing my expectations at every turn and keeping me on my toes.

I thank the wonderful NICU staff at OPRMC and the March of Dimes for getting him home to us so we can watch him grow...and now walk! We'll be saying thanks again by walking in the March for Babies - this year Greyson will be walking at least part of it on his own two feet!

To those who have donated to us already, THANK YOU!
And to those who haven't yet - just click here. The walk in is 50 days and we are not quite to half our goal yet. Please help us get there!

Great...just great

So Greyson is a hot, hot mess. I thought it was just his cold rearing it's ugly head, but then I noticed a little white bump in his mouth - a finger width away from his top 4 teeth. That's right - his first set of molars are coming in. Joy.

This is what I have to look forward to:
The first set of molars is usually cut between 12 and 15 months; a second set will probably come through in the months before your child's second birthday. Unfortunately, your baby will probably find them very painful and will, quite understandably, be miserable and irritated for days.
I could not be more thrilled about this. Le Sigh.
