Amelia Mae: Three Months
3 months ago today we met you for the first time. You emerged from my body and I pulled you up in my arms. And in the 3 months since that magical day, in my arms is still your favorite place to be, and I couldn't be happier about that.
You are full of smiles and coos. You are a wonderful sleeper and just a sweet, sweet girl. I love looking at your beautiful face, I love making you smile and I just love you.
Don't grow up too quickly.
all my love.

Our Little Helpers
like, say, when you are trying to recover an earring that was accidentally dropped down the sink.
But when they bring their own tools, you have to let them try!
And then there is our little baker.
Amelia likes to help by holding the recipe and just being a source of unbelievable cuteness!
I mean really, I can't get over how cute she is!
She helped me make scones that turned out HORRIBLY! When you question a recipe that calls for 1.5 TABLESPOONS of salt, go with your gut and use teaspoons.
I love our little helpers!

four at the zoo
We went to the zoo and Saturday. It was a really lovely day. Greyson ran himself silly. We rode the train and the carousel. We saw a polar bear, snakes, monkeys, llama, birds, goats and much more. We had a really fun day as a family of four.
Greyson even rode on an elephant...
...well, an elephant statue!
Amelia missed most of the zoo...
...but the fresh air and comfy ride helped her take a wonderful nap.

My Smiling Amelia

For the most part Amelia is a happy, smiley baby. Yes, she has her moments...or HOURS when I'm not home...where she is a screaming mess, but when fed and snuggled she is all grins. I'm astonished everyday at how much I love her and her sweet smiles.

Even after shots she is a happy girl!

Greyson:

He has a new

Someone (I'm looking at you, Grandpa Richard) taught Greyson how to move his little red chair over to the sink. Now it's a constant battle to keep him out of the sink, off the counter, away from the stove, etc. But, on hot days like we've been having a little play time in the sink can be fun. I just had to keep reminding myself, "It's just water, I can clean it up later" as Greyson poured cups of water on the counter and onto the floor.
Amelia:

What can I say, my little girl is becoming a spunky and chunky monkey! She has a little personality and she can be feisty. But she's also full of smiles that just melt my heart.

I also love her froggy face. She looks like this every time she is in the swing.

We took her to meet her Great-Grandma Persons last week. I know that seeing Miss A brightened Grandma's day.

I love this photo, I think she looks like a baby Greek Goddess.
This is why I haven't been writing much lately.

Between starting work again, taking care of a toddler and an infant, and this relentless heat I'm one tired momma! But I wouldn't trade it for the world. I mean look at those two - they my make my life complete and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Sibling love

I love this picture because it looks like she's telling him a secret.

I'm so happy that (for the moment) he likes her. I hope they will become good friends. Part of why I wanted our kids this close together is so that they could be friends as well as siblings. I'll keep you posted on how it works out.

More photos!!
Today he took a bowl of mini chocolate chips outside with him while he was playing...

They melted and then he melted down. DESPAIR!!

The boys relaxing. It's exhausting being a big brother and daddy.
Now on to Miss A!

She's been working hard on holding her head up and growing some chubby cheeks...

She is succeeding on both accounts!
Amelia Mae: One Month
Amelia Mae is a sweet girl. She likes to be held, she likes to sleep (she's a REALLY good night sleeper) and she likes to eat - no LOVES to eat! I weighed her on the Wii today and she came in at well over 8 pounds!! Not bad for coming home at less than 6 pounds!

Hello Bright Eyes.
(We think her eyes are going blue like her brothers. Just recently they have gotten much lighter. Mommy is going to be the only browned one in the house!)

Look at the head control!

Yum, yum, yum! I want to eat!
(She is a great nurser now! It was a hard first 2 weeks, but now we have it figured out.)

Curled up in Auntie Rachel's lap, taking a snooze.

Snoozing again! This time in the arms of Grandma Ann.

Our unhappy monkey! She did NOT like having her picture taken.
(This is why announcements haven't been mailed yet. We've been trying to get a good photo and she hasn't been too cooperative!)

3 weeks
This was my first week solo and it went great. Greyson was easier going than normal and seems to be settling in well to his role as big brother. He loves to look at "Baby Mill-ya" and likes to touch her little feet.

Greyson has also become a little car spoiled this week. With the new Cars 2 movie coming out this week Greyson has been getting a "new car" practically every time we go out. It's getting ridiculous, but he LOVES them.

He's also been going to bed better. Well, he's not always going to sleep right away, but he is playing quietly by himself in his room once we tuck him in for the night. I'm totally fine with this - it means that Michael or I don't have to lay down with him until he falls asleep.
Amelia on the other hand hasn't been sleeping as well. We are down to only getting 2-3 hour blocks of sleep at night. Still not bad, but I don't want the trend of more night wakings to continue.

She's a champion day-time sleeper though.

And she is just so beautiful. She's really filled out this week. She's getting chubby cheeks and her legs aren't as baggy. I'm interested in seeing how much she weighs. She just seems so much bigger now.

Better than Productive
I love just looking at her. I adore kissing her cheeks, her chin, her forehead. I love smelling her hair and looking at her beautiful eyes. I love seeing how much she has grown and changed in just 3 weeks.
So today, instead of being productive, I held my baby and really, I can't think of a better use of my time.

Baby skin
But today I noticed how much better her skin looks. Most of the peeling has stopped and now that she's gaining weight the wrinkles are gone. Her color has also evened out.
It's strange how much has changed in just 2 weeks. She is more beautiful every day.

"MOM! I can't believe you just told everyone I had weird skin!"

Growing Girl!
The pediatrician is happy with her gain and so are we. I didn't think she would gain it back so fast. Hmm....maybe I jumped the gun on going out and buying her a bunch of newborn sizes yesterday.

Week One

Amelia and I have spent a lot of time snuggled in bed together and it's been wonderful. She is so sweet and so beautiful. I can't get over it, I fall more in love with her every day. So far she's a really calm baby too. She cries, but never for long and we can almost always figure out why she is crying and solve the problem. And she sleeps... a lot. I'm blown away by how much she sleeps. At night we are getting 2, 4 hour stretches from her. I think Greyson was a year old before he slept that well!

The only down-side to this week has been my vertigo. At first we thought it was due to fluid loss or anemia, but now I'm pretty sure I have an inner ear infection. All I know is that is feels like I'm on a boat. Constant rocking. I've had this happen before and can handle it pretty well, but it another reason I'm so glad I could lay-low this week. It's hard to manage much when your equilibrium is all messed up.
Our first week as a family of four has been a nice one. Greyson is warming up to Ameila. Today he even wanted to hold her. It was a sweet moment. I think he's realizing that she is here for good and that he better get used to her.

Amelia's Birth - or how I got my VBAC and healed my heart
On Friday May 27th, 2011 we were supposed to check-in to the hospital at 6am for an induction. However, we over-slept! Seriously, it was the first night in a LONG time we had neither Tallulah nor Greyson in the house and we slept REALLY well in the quiet. When we woke up at 5:45 I called the hospital and let them know we would be late, they said it was fine and not to rush. After a quick (and illegal) breakfast of English Muffins and eggs we headed to the hospital.
We arrived at 7am and we were shown to a less than great room. When we toured we were shown a room with a Jacuzzi tub and big shower, so I asked to be moved to one of those rooms. I’m so happy I did, because even with my water broken they let me labor in a tub! The doctor’s original plan was to start me on Pitocin and then break my water an hour later. Well, I wasn’t okay with this plan, so once again I asked for a change. Instead of starting with Pitocin we broke my water first, then I got a few hours to get labor going on my own before starting drugs. My OB agreed and I got 2.5 hours to see what happened. During that time, I walked the halls while on the portable monitor.

This was just a nice time and Michael and I got a chance to talk about our growing family. After I had walked for awhile I decided to make use of the tub. I wasn't having any contractions, so it wasn't a "pain relieving" soak, but rather a really refreshing one, I felt ready to do this afterward.
They started Pitocin at 10:30am - at this time I was 1-2cm and 80% effaced. The plan was to up the Pit 2 miliunits every 30ish min. I immediately started having regular contractions that were moderately strong. I just breathed through them. We tried several positions but much to my surprise I found I really just wanted to lay on my side in bed. They inserted a IUPC to better monitor my contractions and upped the Pit to a 4 about an hour later (much better then 20 min later!). At that point my contractions got harder and I found that I could only get through them by holding Michael's hand. Our doula, Elizabeth, would rub my back and legs during the contractions which helped so much. We listened to my birthing playlist and I just focused on making it through every contraction.
At 2:15 they checked me and found I was 100% effaced and between a 5 and 6! Huge progress and the pit was still really low, they upped it to a 6 and never had to up it again! The OB said that since I was having regular and strong contractions they wouldn't need to increase it again and that many women need the Pit at a 20 to reach the level I was at. I was so relieved. I asked her at this point how much longer she thought this would take. I just wanted a rough idea so I could rest if need be. She said that 6 more hours wouldn't unheard of and most inductions take around 12 hours. I started to mentally prepare myself for 6 more hours.
At about 2:30 things got much more intense. The contractions started getting stronger and I needed to moan to get through them. I also needed a cherry Popsicle, which my lovely doula gave me bites of between contractions. We called the nurse back in and I was at a 7 and our baby was right at the cervix (0 station). I didn't realize it, but this was transition. During this time on increased intensity the thought running through my head was "Oh gosh, it hurts this bad and I have 6 more hours and to go through transition!"
9 min (yes, NINE - my doula recorded the time) later I got hit with the need to push. And it was a need. I told Elizabeth and Michael that I felt like I had to push, they called the nurse. I felt our baby drop lower! I was checked and told I was complete - a 10 and that our baby was now at a +1 station. I was told I could push when I wanted to. Then everything started going REALLY fast. A new OB came in, a doctor I had met before and really liked, because mine had left the hospital to check on another patient since we all thought I'd be laboring much longer.
I moved to the end on the bed and sat up with my feet on the lower part of the bed. They brought in a large mirror on a stand and I was able to see our baby's head. It wasn't until that moment that I came to terms with the fact that this was really happening. I was going to VBAC, I was going to see my child the moment she came into the world. Michael says he could see the change in me the moment I looked into that mirror. It was amazing. Just a few pushes later and she was out. It seemed like all at once too. I kept waiting for the "ring of fire", but it didn't come. I just leaned into Michael, screamed and pushed her out! Yes, I screamed. No words, but a deep scream that helped me do what I needed to do.
Our baby was born at 3:09pm, less than 7 hours from when they began the induction. I saw her laying between my feet on the bed and without any hesitation I reached down and picked her up and brought her to my chest. They did all the exams, APGAR scoring (8,9,9), etc right there in my arms. Holding her, knowing that my body did what it was built to do, healed me from the trauma of our son's birth. After Greyson was born I just felt this great emptiness, now I felt complete.
Having a VBAC was the right choice for me. And having it induced was too. Everything worked out wonderfully. Our baby was still tiny at 40 weeks, 4 days - only 6lbs 6oz. I shudder to think what would have happened if I had had a repeat c-section at 38 weeks like my original OB wanted to. I have no doubt she would have ended up in the NICU. As it was she had trouble maintaining her body temperature for the first 24 hours and struggled with eating. But we powered through and she came home with us, happy and healthy!
It was an amazingly healing day. I'm proud that I was able to make choices regarding her birth. I chose to labor in my own clothes, when I voiced concerns about something I was listened to and my choices were respected. I had some control and after my son's birth where I had zero control, this made a huge difference.

Amelia is beautiful and our family is whole.
