Greyson's Lullaby

The other day I heard St. Judy's Comet by Paul Simon sung by Mae Robertson (listen to a clip here) and I knew I had found the perfect goodnight song for Greyson. I love that it is a song for a little boy. The lyric "Little boy, won't you lay your body down? Little boy, won't you close your weary eyes. Ain't nothing flashing but the fireflies." sealed the deal for me. It just fits. My little boy never wants to lay his body down or close his weary eyes.

The past few nights have been rough in the Perry household. We've been working hard to stop co-sleeping and getting Greyson to sleep for 6 to 8 hours straight. We had a couple of good days and then past two nights have not gone well. Last night at some point I climbed into Greyson's crib and slept there with him after I just couldn't take his tears anymore. That's right - I slept in his crib. Maybe not my finest moment, but we finally both got some sleep and it was worth it just for that.

Tonight Greyson just fell asleep at 9:30 - an hour past his bedtime, which is almost three hours earlier then he went to sleep last night. (::shakes head) We do some crying it out, but I can not and will not listen to my baby cry for hours, which he will. If he hasn't calmed down and fallen asleep within 20 min. of us putting him to bed then its not going to happen. Hence last nights rocking, letting him cry, nursing, rocking, letting him cry, endless cycle that ended with me folded up in his crib. Even after he fell asleep at midnight he was up every hour or so. I think it was around 3am that the sheer need for sleep won out over "parenting technique".

Little sleepy boy
Do you know what time it is?
Well the hour of your bedtime's
Long been past

And though I know you're fighting it
I can tell when you rub your eyes
You're fading fast
Fading fast

Won't you run come see St. Judy's Comet
Roll across the skies
And leave a spray of diamonds
In its wake
I long to see St. Judy's Comet
Sparkle in your eyes
When you awake

Little boy
Won't you lay your body down
Little boy
Won't you close your weary eyes
Ain't nothing flashing but the fireflies

Well I sang it once
Then I sang it twice
I'm going to sing it three times more
I'm going to stay 'til your resistance
Is overcome
'Cause if I can't sing my boy to sleep
Well it makes your famous daddy
Look so dumb

Won't you run come see St. Judy's Comet
Roll across the skies
And leave a spray of diamonds
In its wake
I long to see St. Judy's Comet
Sparkle in your eyes
When you awake
Oh when you wake, awake

Little boy, little boy
Won't you lay your body down
Little boy, little boy
Won't you close your weary eyes
Ain't nothing flashing but the fireflies

Oh little sleepy boy
Do you know what time it is
Well the hour of your bedtime's
Long been past
Though I know you're fighting it
I can tell when you rub your eyes
That you're fading fast
You're fading fast.

St. Judy's Comet
Paul Simon
I'm happy to report that he was out within 10 min. of us closing his door tonight. I really hope that he'll sleep better tonight. Maybe he just needed a good lullaby.

I'm so sorry you had a rough night. You know what, I think whatever it takes to teach him to sleep in his bed! We figured out a new routine after Christmas (which is kind of not working right now with the sickness) but I want to blog about it soon. I'm interested to hear what you figure out works! I like to "leverage" other ideas!

I feel your pain too! I have to travel next Monday and it will be the first night Radar sleeps without me. We'll see how that goes for the poor nanny who will be stuck with him. I have given up on his crib. He hates it and even if I put him in there when he's already asleep, the moment he stirs and realizes he's there, all hell breaks lose. So I bought a thin memory foam mattress and cut a crib sized piece. It's on the floor in the guest room (his safe room). So I hang out with him on the floor and read books, sing songs and play in the evening and he falls asleep on the floor (on his mattress). He'll sleep for hours on the floor, but not in his crib. So I haven't slept in the crib yet, but I have slept some night on the floor... But hey, I figure we'll be longingly looking back on these days before we know it, so on we go!
