Should have gone with my gut!

Poop has been an ongoing struggle with Greyson for a long time. Until this week he hadn't pooped without the help of a suppository since March. We tried everything, juice, Karo syrup, tummy rubs and warm cloths, etc. Sunday night we gave him a dose of Miralax per the pediatricians instructions. Sunday night was one of the worst we have ever had. Greyson SCREAMED for hours and I could hear his tummy gurgling, it was awful. He finally fell asleep and the next day he pooped on his own! (While Great Aunts Ann and Alice were watching him!) I was excited that he pooped but just don't think the screaming and discomfort he went through was worth it. So no more Miralax for us!

Greyson has been getting breast milk with a tsp of Enfamil 22 in each bottle per the instructions we were given in the NICU. I had asked the pediatrician if it was okay to quit adding formula and he said "I'd keep doing it. It's not doing him any harm." Well now I think it was - about two weeks ago I finally decided to go with my gut instinct and cut out all formula from his diet. Low and behold today he pooped twice on his own! I really think that the formula was the source of our problems and it has finally made it out of his system.

I'm so glad he pooped on his own and that I finally had the wherewithal to do what I knew in my heart was right. And because I want to give his digestive track time to get back in order I am delaying introducing solids even longer - hopefully to the point that we will skip the mush altogether and go right to table food.

I recommend skipping the baby food and waiting for table food both of my boys hated the baby food we tried everything at least once and some stuff a few times and they both gagged on it and sometimes threw up. So no worries about waiting to introduce foods he'll thank you later for letting him skip the nasty tasteless baby mush.

At one point in my life I think I relied heavily on "gut instincts" and it just so happens to coincide with a time that felt "more on track".
I have been recently trying to restart that instinctual part of my mind/body, where I truly believe we somehow know best.
Good job!

I always heard that new moms talk a lot about baby poop, but I never appreciated it until becoming a new mom! Who would have thought that poop would be such a full topic. I am so glad that Greyson is pooping freely now... just goes to show that all the good things they say about breast milk are so totally true. If you do introduce any mush into his diet before moving onto steak and lobster, there are some that might encourage poop (peas and sweet potato) and might be a good segue into other things. Radar just started on some foods a couple of weeks ago.. some seem to stop him up a bit (the cereal), but about 4 hours after giving him a big helping of straight sweet potato, he pooped like an elephant! Of course I'm not feeding him any jarred foods... all home cooked.

Good ongoing luck with the pooping... and whatever advice comes your way, stick to that momma's instinct that is much more often right than wrong!
