Letter to Greyson: 1 YEAR!

Dear Greyson-
One year ago today you were born. One year ago today I was desperately trying to keep you safe inside me just a little longer. We were just a few days away from making it to 30 weeks - my 2nd, and I thought very attainable goal (goal #1 being 48 hours from when I went into the hospital so we could get both steroid shots to help your lungs, goal #2 = 30 weeks, goal #3 after Christmas and goal #4 your Due Date - In FEBRUARY!) for us. But you and my placenta had other plans and at 11:57 pm you were pulled into this world. (Read more about that here.)

If there is one thing you have proved to me this year it is that you didn't really need those extra days. Yes, it would have been great to keep you cooking a few days longer, even better to have given birth to a healthy 8+ pound baby Greyson (I'm pretty sure you would have been at least that big!), but you were so strong that 29 weeks was good enough for you. Now no one who meets you would ever guess that you were born so soon. You are hitting all your milestones (except for talking, but I chalk that up to your being a boy) and seem like an average 1 year old.

Since coming home from the NICU at 52 days old you have been so healthy. This Spring you had a little cough that freaked me out, but it turned out to be nothing and in a few days you were over it. That's been it! I don't know how you've pulled it off but keep it up little man!

This month you have gotten even better at crawling - seriously you are a crazy fast crawler, standing and even cruising the furniture a little. You seem to have lost interest in walking though, opting instead to crawl, probably because you are so good at it. You also really know who you are and what things are yours. When we returned from our trip over Thanksgiving you raced to your toys and played with everyone laughing and smiling as if to say "Guys, I'm back! I missed you!" You know who we are too. Seeing you smile and reach for your dad when he comes home from work is such a wonderful part of our day. Your dad taught you how to "give five" this week and we have been having so much fun with that. Now we are starting to work on baby signs!

You are suddenly really tall and it's getting harder for me to carry you around. I'm looking forward to your next check-up so I can see just how tall you are. You are so much your father's son! And after your first haircut you look even more like him!

You are such a good eater now too! You are still breast feeding about 6 times a day, but now you are also eating 3 solid meals a day too. You have never really enjoyed baby food, but you love adult food. Ground beef is your favorite - you are a little carnivore! You hate cold food. You even spit out ice cream!! Kid, ice cream is the best, never spit that stuff out!

Greyson, you amaze me every day. It has been a wonderful year with you and I can't wait to spend the rest of my life totally in awe and in love with you!

Happy Birthday to my wonderful little bird!

Love,
Momma

Happy Birthday Greyson. It's so true that no one would think that you were born early! I can see now that you're going to be one of those athletes that pulls out the win at the end... halfway through they'll be saying that you're too far behind to win, but then in the last 10 yards, everyone in the crowd will get whiplash and they see watch you zoom by the competition and earn the gold. It has been so fun following your milestones over these last months and your smile is infectious!!!

I hope your mom has the sense to warm your birthday cake and put "hot" fudge on top! (Although the ice cream thing is baffling... how could you not like ice cream?)

Big hugs from the Bahamas!!

Congratulations to ALL of you on Greyson's First Birthday!
It is no wonder at all where his strength comes from.

And don't worry Greyson, as good as ice cream is, I can understand wanting warm milk instead.

Keep it up Greyson, Morgan, and Michael! Another year will be a breeze. As he starts running circles around you...
