One Year Ago Today the Ride Began...

I year ago tonight I turned on the bathroom light to discovered that my son hadn't kicked my bladder and that the three times I had gotten up to use the bathroom that night, wasn't urine but blood. Lots of blood. Blood in the bed, on the floor trailing to the bathroom, the toilet was just full of blood. I woke Michael up and he sprang into action and went off in search of my OB's phone number. Looking around I decided this was a 911 emergency, so I called.

I was 28 weeks pregnant to the day.

I could feel our little bird (as we knew him then) kicking so I knew at least for the moment he was okay. I sat on a dish towel in the hallway and waited for the ambulance to arrive. I don't remember much about getting loaded into the ambulance except that it was cold and the guy wasn't great at putting in IV's. I had to convince them to take me directly to Overland Park Regional. That was the hospital where my doctor was located and I knew it had a level 3 NICU. They finally agreed and whisked me over there. Michael following behind with instructions not to drive as fast as the ambulance. When we arrived at OPR I was taken right up to Labor and Delivery where they checked everything out. Much to my surprise I was having contractions and some pretty serious ones. I didn't even register them, there was too much adrenalin flowing.

They managed to stop my labor and in the chaos that was the next few hours we discovered I had placenta previa and that I was indeed just 28 weeks pregnant. According to their best estimates Little Bird was measuring 2 to 2.5 pounds. That just seemed way too small. I spent the next 11 days at the hospital trying to give him more time to grow.

Morgan, bet this is a hard day for you re-living that memory. You did an awesome job taking care of him that day and keeping him "cooking" for the next 11 days. As we have learned, every day makes a difference. Hug him tight and know that his is such a miracle!

I know the terror of seeing blood when you're not supposed to... with me it was in my pregnancy before Radar and it was much earlier. Sadly mine was not a happy ending. But Greyson is as happy of an ending as I can imagine! I'm so glad that he stayed put for a bit longer to grow a bit more and get a bit more ready to tackle this big bad world! Well done... those were 11 days very well spent - the proof is in the pudding and oh what a cute puddin' he is!
